Pete Soderling

Pete Soderling

Pete Soderling is currently the founder & CEO of Data Council. As a former software engineer, serial founder and investor in data-backed startups, his passion is in building valuable resources and community for data scientists, engineers, analysts and product managers. Previously Pete founded Hakka Labs (a social network for software engineers), Stratus Security (an early cloud-based enterprise API platform) and mechanikal (a software development consultancy in NYC). A graduate of New York University, Pete has served as a mentor for 500 Startups, has been a TEDx, O’Reilly Strata and QCon speaker and has worked with technical founders across the globe.

Previous Committee Co-Chairs

Alberto Betella

Alberto Betella

For the past two decades Alberto has been working in and speaking about tech, innovation and science. He has an extensive technical and scientific background, which he leverages to solve real-world business problems. He is the Chief Technology Officer at Alpha Health, a moonshot backed by Telefonica with the goal of improving life for billions of people. Alpha was created to address some of the biggest problems in society by delivering radical solutions and breakthrough technology. Prior to that, he worked as CTO at Badi, a startup where he crafted the tech and the team that built it from the ground up. During his time at Badi, he scaled up from 0 to 1+ million users and he directly contributed to secure $45M VC funding in Europe and US. Alberto holds a PhD in Information and Communication Technologies with a specialization in Affective Computing and Empathic Systems.

Robert Winslow

Robert Winslow

Robert is a seasoned software consultant with a decade of experience shipping great products. He thrives in early-stage startup environments, and works primarily in Go, Python, and Rust. He has led back-end development at companies like RankScience and Spot.com; created a rigorous, open-source time-series benchmarking suite for InfluxData; and rapidly prototyped software in a skunkworks-type product lab. He’s taught graduate statistics at GalvanizeU and mentored at the Stanford d.school. He helps maintain Google’s FlatBuffers project, one of the world’s fastest serialization libraries. A colleague once described him as “the developer equivalent of ‘The Wolf’ from Pulp Fiction."

Previous Conference Tracks

Core Data Engineering

Our Core Data Engineering track gives practical examples of full-stack data architectures, data pipelines and plumbing systems, and reference examples of ETL functions & workflow schedulers. The track explores the stories behind the challenges faced by experienced engineers when building modern data infrastructures and features key open sources projects our speakers are keen to share with the community.

Data Science & AI Impact on Life

This track focuses on the impact of data science on human beings and our environment. We look for applied science that will augment our interactions in the world and help us make informed decisions on issues that are relevant or urgent in order to make measurable improvements in our quality of life. The speakers in this track are selected for their abilities to address a relevant unmet need, and to provide an in-depth technical explanation of a novel data-driven solution in the areas of health & wellness, social interactions, learning, and economics.

Streaming Systems

This track looks at various tooling used to build real-time applications and the underlying data infrastructure that supports the movement of data to computation. Examples of talks include case studies on how applications use messaging systems, how applications maintain consistency and correctness while ingesting large amounts of data, and computational frameworks for processing data with low latency. This is a practical track for engineers looking to design the backbone of a data intensive application architecture.

Data Science & AI Impact on Business

This track addresses the major challenges faced when applying DS/ML/AI to corporate data with an emphasis on the common aspects data teams face: identifying the data you have, deciding how to organize and clean it, building the actual algorithmic models themselves, and ultimately, integrating the models into an application and scaling it into the organization’s IT systems.

Max 500: We are not a “mega-conference”

We aim to keep attendees lower than 500 attendees for any Data Council event or conference. We've been there too, and we know the reason you attend conferences is not to be sold to or lose yourself in a massive sea of attendees.

Aiming for less than 500 attendees ensures that you have a fair chance to engage with speakers 1:1 on your favorite track during Speaker Office Hours. It's worth noting that this is not a watered-down "mega-conference," but an intentional community-powered conference for engineers & scientists, by engineers & scientists, like yourself!

Generally, our conferences attract between 300-500 people depending on the season, location, and speakers.

Speaker Office Hours: Meet your crowd

Most speakers hold "office hours" after their talk, which are a great opportunity to take the discussion further in a smaller setting.

Unlike Q&A where you are usually limited to asking one question, you will be able to have an in-depth back-and-forth discussion with the speaker and like-minded attendees - a great way to learn more and build long-term relationships.

Attendees often mention Speaker Office Hours as one of their favorite perks of attending our events.
